Physical Rehabilitation

The Small Animal Rehabilitation Clinic at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is a worldwide leader in the area of physical rehabilitation of small animals. A full-time physical therapist and licensed veterinary technician, veterinary assistants, and board certified veterinary surgeons provide state-of-the-art care for patients following surgical or medical management of musculoskeletal disorders. Rehabilitation modalities and facilities include an underwater treadmill, whirlpool, ground treadmill, therapeutic ultrasound, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, cryotherapy, heat therapy, therapeutic exercises, and massage therapy. To monitor a patient's progress, animals are assessed at regular intervals. Assessment tools include a force plate to measure the amount of weight placed on each limb, and a dual energy x-ray absorptiometer (DEXA) used to noninvasively measure body composition and bone density. Most patients derive significant benefit from a period of physical rehabilitation following major surgery to achieve a quicker and more complete return to function.
